I Was Born from Cyber Literature

By M Badri

The rise of www.cybersastra.net in mid 2001 ago became an important note for the development of literature in Indonesia. Many of the new poets were born from the cyber literature, including myself who studied to arrange words in the virtual media. It is new media for the publication of literature which is more democratic and does not recognize caste. It is a media alternative for the prospective writers who have not been able to penetrate the hegemony of "newspaper literature".

In cyber space literature, I learned to write, dialectic, including to accept insults and compliments. Because it provides open space for aesthetic and thematic freedom, some writers assess cyber literature as a "trash can". However, in "trash can" I began picking up words and making poems, short stories, essays and soliloquy.

Cyber literature also encourages the creation of multicultural literature. The erosion of geographical boundaries in cyberspace makes all cultural groups can co-exist, with each local characters. This is because, according to Mahayana (2010), locality in the literature is not just space, location, place or geographical area. Locality however has been reduced as the background (setting) in the text which informs place, situation, mood, or a picture of the cultural community.

Although derived from the literary genre of cyber, I did not forget the "newspaper literature". this is because in the print media I actually grew up. Both media have a role in sharpening my literary talents. Although cybersastra.net does not exists now, the new media continues to emerge. Social media revolution increasingly fosters the development of cyber literature. According to Faruk HT (2004), there is a positive correlation between the development of communication technology with cultural sophistication.

Now countless number of literary blogs emerge in the blogosphere. The poets regularly write on the walls of Facebook. Even Twitter, which provides only 140 characters, provokes to the rise of a new generation of fiction writing such as mini fiction (@ fiksimini). Now when the maestro writers publish their literature at online media, I will proudly say: I was born from the cyber literature! (*)
